Prof. Lercari speaks at "together@lmu"

Protecting California's Diverse Cultural Heritage through Community-based Participatory Research: New Approaches and Epistemologies

06.06.2023 18:00  – 20:00

Upcoming lecture by Prof. Lercari within the framework of "together@lmu", LMU's diversity initiative for its community of students and researchers. Check the event calendar for this and other upcoming talks.

Abstract:

The daily loss of cultural heritage occurring worldwide results in the demise of our collective identity, connection with the past, and understanding of how cultural values shape our present and future. This lecture illustrates new community-based participatory approaches and epistemologies that researchers can use to counter the dramatic loss of a diverse heritage in ways that increase cultural awareness and improve the quality of life for their diverse partner communities.

Prof. Lercari will introduce several case studies from California in which citizen science and other emerging technologies, such as Augmented Reality, object digitization, mobile apps for visitors, and open-source collections management software for local museums, have been utilized to address the complexity of protecting cultural heritage and create mutually beneficial relationships between academics and community stakeholders. A particular focus will be on how these approaches and epistemologies contribute to translating humanities research into public enrichment.
